What is your outlet of self-expression, Fuzz? For Friends of B&F Jennie, musical theater allows her to be open and honest. Read on to explore her side of the story!
Meet Jennie – or Jennifer Rengka – a talented, curly-haired presence who just made her musical theater debut, Polarisasi Musikal. As she greeted us with a bright smile and sparkling eyes, she told us about her love for acting, singing, and dancing she had since she was just 4!
Probably because I can express things that I can’t express with words. My teacher once said “If you cannot say it with words then sing, if you cannot do it by singing then dance.” – and I think that’s true – with musical theater, I can express myself as much as I can.
I get to be a human when I’m doing it. I get to be vulnerable, which was revealing to me. But the most important thing is I feel like I get to know myself better when I’m doing it. I know when I’m happy, or sad, or angry – and experiencing that gives me a lot of fulfillment.
It’s about being honest about everything – about what I can do and what I cannot do, about what I am and what I am not – and being honestly open about it.
I think I’ve learned to be honest and accept myself because of my hair. Back then, I used to treat my curly hair the way straight hair would be taken care of. But now that I’ve totally embraced my curly hair, I feel that I can express myself more freely.
